Sensitivity analysis of distributed environmental simulation models: understanding the model behaviour in hydrological studies at the catchment scale
نویسندگان
چکیده
The development of new hydrological simulation tools allows for the modelling of large hydrological catchments, with the aim of comprehensive management of the water resources, control of diffuse pollution processes, such as the fate of agricultural fertilizants and finally, with purposes of economical optimization of the crop yields as a function of the expected climate, the watershed characteristics and the socio-economical conditions of the region where the catchment is located. This paper describes the sensitivity analysis of a hydrological distributed model applied in one large European watershed by using a two-step procedure. Firstly, it allows for the consideration of a huge input parameter data set by using an implementation of the Morris screening procedure, eschewing the huge computational requirements arising from the necessary repetitive simulations. In the second step it provides quantitative estimations of sensitivity in terms of variance decomposition procedures based upon the FAST method for both the hydrological and the water quality determinants. q 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

In this paper, the modeling is based on division of the catchment into a grid mesh. Each cell has a unique response function independent of the functioning of other cells Summation of the flow responses from the cells, result the flow hydrograph from this area basin.A method is presented to simulation the flow hydrograph within a river basin using the hydrological model WetSpa. WetSpa is a GIS-b...

a r t i c l e i n f o Catchment scale hydrological models are critical decision support tools for water resources management and environment remediation. However, the reliability of hydrological models is inevitably affected by limited measurements and imperfect models. Data assimilation techniques combine complementary information from measurements and models to enhance the model reliability a...

Over-parameterization is a well-known and often described problem in hydrological models, especially in distributed models. Therefore, using special methods to reduce the number of parameters via sensitivity analysis is important to achieve efficiency. This paper describes a sensitivity analysis strategy that graphically assigns for each parameter a relative sensitivity index and relationship o...
